are braces considered a medical expense in arkansas for a parent who pays half of medical expense?

My insurance does not cover cosmetic things like braces, but It was my ex-wife who got my daughter braces with talking to me at all. Since its a cosmetic issue I don't thnk i should be required to pay half the expenses.

I agree with you. She should have consulted you first in this decision if she expects you to pay half. However braces can be done for medical reasons. For instance if her speech is impaired, trouble eating/chewing foods, pain in jaws, etc due to the placement of the teeth and even some are claiming emotional health issues if the teeth are causing low self-esteem. However, the orthodontist would have first had to contact the insurance company for approval if the braces were deemed a medical necessity. Something that may be on your side is that your ex should have had to sign papers at the ortho's office stating that she will pay for the braces and to sign off on the treatment plan. So the office should be billing her for future payments. Not sure if that will help you out legally or not.

Why can't all children get the same Medicaid Benefits as kids in Arkansas?

In the state of Arkansas if parents meet the finacial cut off thier kids get what is called ARKIDS. It doesn't matter if the parent or parents work and have medical insurance available. They can pay for insurance for themsleves and let Medicaid cover the kids. Medicaid is a federally funded program so why can't all kids in the U S have the same level of care?
Why do we as taxpayers have to pay for those who choose not to cover thier children with insurance offered through an employer. Also I kow someone who does not work, is not looking for work yet her children have been on the medicaid roll for over 10 years. That is not right.

Because Medicaid is only half funded by the federal government. The other half comes from the state itself. If a state (like Arkansas) wants to cover more kids, they (the state) will have to put up the money - which will be matched by the federal government. Therefore, some states do not have or do not want to spend the money to cover more kids, as Arkansas does. .

what will happen to these kids if bush vetos a bill to reauthorize funding for state insurance plan for kids?

"By September 30th, the health of half of Arkansas' children could take a turn for the worst. That's the grim prognosis for youngsters covered by AR Kids First insurance, if the president vetoes the bill to reauthorize the program's funding....Right now Bush is saying the private sector should be able to donate funds to give health insurance to 6.6 million kids nationwide...100,000 of them in Arkansas."-quoted from arkansasmatters.com

ARKids First has helped poor families in arkansas provide insurance for their children for several years. Insurance is so expensive that poor families will go without insurance to be able to keep up with bills, food, and transportation. They have relied on ARKids 1st to pay for their childrens medical needs. So how are parents going to be able to afford medical insurance for their children? What are these parents supposed to do? My sister is on ARKids and our dad, a long time republican, says this is the first time he's ever supported the Democrats

That's what they get for giving their electoral votes to Bush.

COBRA Premiums Consume 84 Percent of Unemployment Benefits - eMaxHealth.com

A report issued on the same day that the government released its latest unemployment data shows why most laid-off people are likely to lose their health coverage: The average national premium costs for family COBRA coverage consume almost 84 percent of average unemployment benefits.

The report, issued by the consumer health organization Families USA, focuses on the unaffordability of COBRA coverage, which allows laid-off workers to retain their employer-based insurance if those laid-off workers pay the full cost of that coverage.

The average unemployment insurance (UI) benefit varies substantially from state to state, as do average COBRA premiums. According to the report:

* On average, nationally, UI monthly benefits are $1,278, while COBRA monthly premiums for family coverage are $1,069, or 83.6 percent of UI benefits.

* In 41 states (AL, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, IO, KS, LA, ME, MD, MI, MS, MO, MT, NE, NH, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WV, WI, and WY) plus the District of Columbia, COBRA family coverage premiums, on average, consume more than three-fourths of average UI benefits.
