COBRA Premiums Consume 84 Percent of Unemployment Benefits
To maintain their employer-based health coverage under COBRA, most unemployed people would have to devote an unrealistically high proportion of their incomes to health insurance. For many, it would take their entire unemployment check and more to continue health insurance coverage for themselves and their families.

Where can I get family health insurance in Alabama?
May 25, 2007 by stefie42886 | Posted in Insurance
I will be quitting my job soon to be a stay at home mom, thus losing my medical insurance. My husband's insurance through his company is very expensive due to it being so small (only 20 or so people in the company). I will need to find a health insurance plan for my family, but am having a hard time finding any plans that have good coverage and don't have a large premium amount. Does anyone know of a good health insurance company I should look at? Please keep in mind I live in Alabama....a lot of the insurance companies online only apply to certain states. Thanks a bunch.
I can't imagine it's going to be cheaper on your own.
You need to go to a local, independent agent, and ask for quotes. They'll have the ones with providers in your area.
If you have no preexisting conditions, and you're around 30, it's GOING to cost YOU, $250 a month, your HUSBAND $250 a month, and the KIDS, $200 a month EACH. Is that cheaper than your husband's plan?
If you have preexisting conditions, they will be excluded, OR, you might flat out be declined.
that's JUST what health insurance costs. Or, you sacrifice coverage, OR, you take a $5,000 deductible before the insurance kids in, OR, you sign up for a health discount plan where no one takes the plans, OR you get scammed from over the internet.
You CAN'T buy a brand new cadillac for $10, you CAN'T get family health insurance with comprehensive coverage for $120 a month, except through an employer.

I need positive information on dealing with insurance denials and how to have one overturned?
May 24, 2007 by Shy | Posted in Insurance
We have Blue/Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama that is through International Paper of Alabama. My husband is the subcriber and I am listed on the policy. I have a medical problem-Treatment Resistant Depression. There is a procedure that will help my condition very much and be less expensive for the insurance company. I donot understand why they deny something that would help me and save them very much money in the long run. Thank you for your advice!
In order to get this paid, you'll have to almost think like a lawyer and put a case together, with documentation and expert opinion. Most insurers are inclined to say "no" first and quickly, so that they don't waste their time on "quack" treatments. However, this also means that they aren't creative in their thinking. Put together a solid case, and "sell" them.
Good Luck!

I need free dental work can you please help?
Feb 13, 2007 by ceciliaowe | Posted in Dental
I am 26 years old and I have medical insurance that I pay out of my own pocket, I have a job but make very little money. I have 5 broken teeth, alot of cavities and I have a partial that leaves blisters on the roof of my mouth. I need a lot of work done and I need to get a bridge.. Is there anyone or anyplace that will be able to help me in the state of Alabama... If not I will do the best I can to travel..
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.
Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.
Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information."
Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs.
Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you.
Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you.
Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.
I personally offer free care or reduced fee care or "overlook the bill" care when I know the exact circumstances of a person's financial position. If they have had a medical hardship, for instance, I am sympathetic. You can't come in just looking for free care, though. You have to come in with the intentions of doing the best you can and then I decide exactly how I am going to handle the financial aspect. I can usually tell who is actually trying to pay and who simply wants to skip out on me. I do not usually consider smokers to be in financial need, though. If they can find a couple thousand dollars a year for cigarettes, they could find the same amount of money and fix almost any dental problem. Maybe you can find a local dentist who has the same attitude.

Unemployed squeezed on health insurance
09.01.09
WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly unemployed Americans will have to spend about 30 percent of their jobless benefits on average to pay for health insurance through their former employer, according to a new report. And if they want coverage for their families, the report by Families USA says it will take more than 80 percent of their unemployment check. Unemployment hit a 16-year high last month as another 524,000 jobs were cut. For all of 2008, government says the economy lost a net total of 2.6 million jobs. When workers lose their jobs, they are usually eligible to maintain their health insurance coverage through their old employer if they pay the premiums, plus a 2 percent administrative fee. The benefit is referred to as COBRA insurance, because of the law that established it. As part of his economic stimulus package, President-elect Barack Obama is proposing to spend about $80 billion dollars to extend unemployment benefits and to subsidize health care for people who have lost their jobs.
