Guaranteed Health Insurance for Small Business - Florida?

I just became self employed this year. I saw Florida has open enrollment for the month of August (which is almost over) for small businesses. Would I qualify for this program? All of my tax documents from last year show I was not self employed.
Also - when we last applied for insurance my husband was denied because of his weight. He has since lost a lot of weight. I'm not sure how this would impact anything but wanted to mention it.

In the state of Florida - the August open enrollment is specifically for sole proprietors or 'groups of one". (2 or more people are required to form a group plan for every other time of year).

These plans are typically very expensive because everyone is accepted onto the plan regardless of health issues. Unless you have major health issues then it almost always makes sense to purchase a much cheaper individual health insurance plan in FL.

You typically will have to show tax documents proving that you are a legitimate business and not just a business formed solely for purpose of obtaining group health insurance.

You will want to shop around and compare quotes from at least 3 different companies. This is where an independent agent will come in handy.

Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google

A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:

1) Create a blog pertaining to your field

2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!

3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.

4) Advertise on Craiglist

Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

How lucrative is the insurance business? -Current insurance agents?

I am getting my insurance license (waiting for my background check and fingerprints to come back to take the test) and was just wondering just how lucrative is the business while in a recession? I do understand that you must put in a lot of hours and not "expect" accounts to fall into my lap...

Just wondering if any of you out there have any personal experience... Also, on a side note.... any advice or suggestions on studying/taking the state test? (florida)

From a business perspective, selling things you don't own is very profitable. Insurance is a risk management tool and there is always risk; the economic environment just changes the profile of that risk.

My tips for the test really depends on who you are as a test taker, but generally don't stress and focus on the question at hand.

Florida Insurance Revisited - WUSF Public Broadcasting

TAMPA (2009-01-09) Some homeowners are upset with the "take-out" or shifting of insurance policies from Citizens. The idea is to lower the state-run insurer's risk exposure. But, consumers believe it's putting them at risk. It's a part of the state's ongoing attempt to stabilize Florida's property insurance market.

During the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons, a total of eight storms cost Florida billions of dollars in property damage. Insurance companies stopped writing new policies and there was a stampede to not renew current policies.

Like tens of thousands, Michael Letcher, a former bank executive and licensed CPA, had his policy canceled.

Letcher's hunt for a company to insure his Lake Worth home led to the creation of his online Home Insurance Buyers Guide. His independent company helps homeowners find, screen and contact insurance companies that are writing new policies in their area.
