Limiting the cost of home insurance in Florida?
Apr 10, 2008 by Wanny | Posted in Insurance
How can we limit the cost of home insurance in Florida?
Pay cash for the house, and self insure.
Increase your deductible to $25,000 or even $50,000.
Florida is a high risk area. Even at the prices you are paying for insurance, the companies aren't making money in your area. The way to limit the insurance cost, is take more of the risk on yourself.

What dog breeds are not approved by Florida home owners insurance?
May 30, 2007 by GSD4ever | Posted in Insurance
Iver heard you can't get home owneres insureance if you own certain dog breeds like siberian huskys and pitbulls. Can some tell me if German shepherd and Alaskan Malamutes are also on that list
I think akitas and dobermans are on that list . it is not the fact that you wont get home insurance it will just be higher . I live in florida too . My sister does as well and because she has a big dog she has to have more house insurance and it is hard enough to get insurance here as it is because of hurricaines ,I would think that they would not be so worried about dogs anymore . good luck .

I would like your opinions, if you live in Florida, are you having trouble getting home owners insurance?
Sep 19, 2006 by GriffinsNC | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I am trying to sell my home in Florida and have interested buyers, but the cost of the insurance is probably going to make the deal fall through. I'm just curious if I am the only one, or is anyone else running into these problems.
This answer is more of an opinion than an answer based on researchable facts. I have a relative living in the Orlando area who has been trying to sell her home since January 2006 and another who lives in the Ft Myers area and is not trying to sell. I also have several friends who live in the south Florida area. All are complaining about increases in homeowner's insurance premuims. Insurance companies have been hit with billions of dollars of claims in the last couple of years in the gulf and atlantic coast areas and have raised rates across the board.
My relative in Orlando is fairly safe from catastrophic damage, but is still having trouble selling her house. My opinion is that this is part of the general nationwide real estate slowdown. As interest rates rise, more and more people are priced out of the market for "average" homes. There is no doubt that an increase in insurance rates, and the possibility of a catastrophic storm play into the equation, but I think that economic conditions are playing a much larger role than people think.
Good luck with your sale.

Some homeowners are upset with the "take-out" or shifting of insurance policies from Citizens. The idea is to lower the state-run insurer's risk exposure. But, consumers believe it's putting them at risk. It's a part of the state's ongoing attempt to stabilize Florida's property insurance market. During the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons, a total of eight storms cost Florida billions of dollars in property damage. Insurance companies stopped writing new policies and there was a stampede to not renew current policies. Like tens of thousands, Michael Letcher, a former bank executive and licensed CPA, had his policy canceled. Letcher's hunt for a company to insure his Lake Worth home led to the creation of his online Home Insurance Buyers Guide. His independent company helps homeowners find, screen and contact insurance companies that are writing new policies in their area. The state offers a similar site: shop and
