"This time of economic hardship for our community is a time for us to reach deep and give more," said Janet Liang, president of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. "At Kaiser Permanente, we remain committed to providing community grants that promote wellness, provide safety-net care for underserved communities and assist innovative approaches to help Hawaii's people thrive."
Among the grants Kaiser Permanente Hawaii made last year were a $50,000 grant to Hamakua Health Center in support of dental health outreach service in rural parts of the Big Island, and 50 $1,000 grants to employee-nominated nonprofit community groups throughout the state. Another of Kaiser Permanente's Community Benefit commitments provides a 100-percent dues waiver on health insurance coverage for Hawaii's young, uninsured population in great financial need. Essentially free care will be provided by Kaiser health care facilities or arranged with local providers as part of a pilot program for 19-to-24 year-olds residing on Oahu who meet financial criteria.
