Georgia Health Plans Get Tax Breaks
Several new Georgia state laws become law as we ring in the new year today. Among these new laws is one which will eliminate both state and local taxes for Georgia health insurers who offer high-deductible health insurance plans. The tax break will save insurance companies an estimated $146 Million over 5 years. The idea behind the law is that it will ultimately save the Georgia Government money as a proliferation of high-deductible health plans will provide coverage for the estimated 1.7million Georgia residents who lack health insurance and end up costing the state money, however critics of the plan question whether this law will do anything to reduce the number of uninsured.

Health Insurance for Self-Employed in Georgia?
Feb 26, 2008 by Michael N | Posted in Insurance
I am a self-employed entrepreneur in residing in the state of Georgia. What health insurance coverage would you recommend? I need good coverage (to help with existing back problems) but I want to keep costs to a minimum.
Since you are self-employed, you might consider enrolling in a “qualified” High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This is health insurance with high deductible amounts, so it costs less than traditional health insurance. Under federal law, the minimum deductible in a HDHP plan is $1,100 for an individual and $2,200 for a family. The maximum deductibles are $5,500 for an individual and $11,000 a family.
The advantage of an HDHP is that you can shelter up to $2,850 for an individual or $5,650 for a family per year from state and federal taxes in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Depending on your tax bracket and where you live, that could save you as much as $2,870 in taxes per year, assuming a combined tax rate of 49.3%—6% in state income tax (Georgia), 28% in federal income tax, and 15.3% in self-employment Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax. Another way of looking at it is that the HSA doubles your buying power, since you are using pre-tax dollars. The contributions you make to an HSA are yours to keep, rolling over each year. The funds are not taxed, provided you use them to pay medical expenses or withdraw them after age 65. The funds earn interest on a tax-deferred basis. Think of it as an IRA that you can use to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.
To find a qualified plan, speak with a health insurance broker. A broker works with several insurers and can find the best plan, rates and coverage for you. To find a broker, log on to a website like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a form requesting a free quote. Good luck!

Affordable, good health insurance in Georgia?
Dec 17, 2008 by Suz e Q | Posted in Insurance
I buy my own health insurance. Currently I am being ripped off by Blue Cross Blue Shield! They suck and they are very expensive. Anyone know a better health insurance that is not too expensive?
I am a 27 year old female that makes $300 a week (just got laid off to part-time)
My company does not offer sh*t! They are a small company of 7 people.
Blue Cross in GA I find not to be very competitive at all. You can use the tool on my site and it'll give you the prices of the other carriers. It requires no personal information to use.
I just sold someone there a policy for a little more than $100/month and it included maternity I believe.

is it legal to keep your ex-spouse on your group health insurance in georgia?
Nov 06, 2006 by upside down | Posted in Insurance
Divorced since 2003, ex does not live with me nor is a dependant, NOT on cobra, and remarried in 2004 (lives with new wife). A georgia policeman told me "you can insure anyone you want". 24 calls to other insurance agents all agree with me- it is not legal. Who is really right???
PS- if the health ins was provided under a domestic partners policy would that be fraud in ga??
I asked the police because I'm the new wife. It's not Cobra, it's Ex-wife and MY husband in this fraud together. I have her insurance card (renewed in 2006) showing her name and his. OUR marriage in 04, he lives w/me, but has mail to her house.
Police blow me off as a revengeful liar trying to get the law to violate HIS privacy laws.
If nothing else, her employer is getting screwed to cover someone not elegible. Proof of the fraud will strengthen my divorce case, I think.
*The truth will set you free*
I just do not believe any insurance company would do this, willingly, it has to be fraud.
No, she cannot carry him as a dependent or spouse once the divorce is final. Since he is not living with her, she can't claim domestic partner either. He would have been eligible for 36 months of COBRA had he elected it at much higher premiums. By leaving him on her coverage, she has been de-frauding her insurance company and possibly her employer if the employer pays part of the premiums.
Most insurance companies have a fraud hotline. The numbers can usually easily be found with an internet search and they are anonymous. Do you what you have to.

Teachers’ fund to lose $525 million - Atlanta Journal Constitution
09.01.09
So the board of the Department of Community Health, which runs the employee health plan, on Thursday approved a lowering of the health benefits rates charged to state agencies, local school districts and the state Department of Education. That essentially would reduce the health plan’s projected net assets by $525 million. “State agencies and local boards of education are facing cuts,” said Carie Summers, chief financial officer for Community Health. The lower rates “give these agencies a break.” Bert Brantley, a spokesman for Gov. Sonny Perdue, said the $525 million “is money we are going to be able to use to soften the [spending] cuts.” He noted the money would only provide a one-time cushion for this fiscal year, which ends June 30. It won’t be available to help school systems and agencies next year, when the state’s fiscal situation may be even worse. State employees and schoolteachers will see no change in the premiums or other costs now charged for health benefits.
