Health insurance- I am moving out of State? Help?!?
Does anyone know what I can do about health insurance? I want to know what health insurances I can pick up when I move to Delaware?
I am going to move out with my fiancee. I will look for work as soon as I do. But I can't lapse in coverage. What do I do?
I have a pre-existing condition so that's why I don't want to just up and move. I need the insurance I get through my job here. But we're going to move out soon.
I wouldn't be too concerned about your health insurance when moving as long as you have had your current policy for more than 12 months. Pre-existing only applies for up to 12 months, so as long as you have had coverage, the new insurance will accept and apply the prior coverage as long as there is not a break in coverage for more than 63 days. Ask for a Certificate of Prior Coverage from your old insurance. The First link below will take you to the Dept. of Health and Human resources and talks about Pre existing. The second link is for HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) which regulates the insurance industry.
Also, your old insurance company may offer COBRA (Continuation of Benefits) but this is usually pretty expensive. You can purchase an individual policy with Blue Cross or Blue Shield of Delaware, Aetna, etc. usually through an insurance broker in the state you move to. This offers a wide range of options such as high deductible plans, HMOS's, deductibles for everything except co-pays for office visits, etc. The costs of this can vary depending on your heath category and the type of plan you buy. Once employed, you can then cancel the individual plan to move onto the group coverage once effective. Hope than helped.
