An idea sweeping the nation to charge motorists for the miles they travel in order to fund future highway construction can hit the road and stay on it until it passes out of Idaho, according to a poll released today by the leading representative group for small business owners.
Each year, the National Federation of Independent Business, America's leading small business association, polls its members on issues vital to their survival as entrepreneurs at both the state and federal levels. NFIB/Idaho will center its lobbying positions on responses it received to six questions on the 2009 State Member Ballot when a new session of the Idaho Legislature convenes on Jan. 12.
When asked if Idaho should replace the current tax on fuel with a vehicle miles traveled tax (VMT) to fund future highway construction and maintenance, 80 percent of NFIB-member Idaho small business owners said 'No,' 11 percent supported the idea, and 9 percent were undecided.
Asked if state or local governments should have the power to revoke the business license) of an employer, if an employee is found to be unauthorized to work in the U.S., 58 percent of respondents said 'No,' 34 percent said 'Yes,' and 8 percent were undecided.
